how much sql is needed for business analyst?

I'm looking in to the business and data analyst role, and looking at job requirements, a lot of them require sql or sas proficiency .  The good thing is that I actually got a call on a few postings, but after they told me that there will be an sql exam, I had to back down.  I'm learning SQL on my own at the moment;  so I"m wondering, what type of knowledge I need to know.  Right now, i'm just going over w3schools sql website going over all the different functions.  Is that enough to be considered' sql proficient'?  Am I expected to memorize all the functions?

I'm just trying to figure out if I am "learning" the right way., and what is the best way to prepare myself

The best thing to do is to ask what types of questions they might ask and what level of SQL proficiency they are looking for.  It would be better than simply backing down on the given position.  Might actually be OK to say, "Look - I might not get this job but can you do me a favor and give me an idea of what type of SQL skill-set you are looking for?"

You can always call them later and tell them that you're ready!  The position might still be open and you might even get hired.

I'm not claiming that this will answer your question but you might be interested in this:

At the OP

In my situation it requires a heavy amount.  I honestly feel I could move into a SQL development position I write so much.  Not saying I would be a rock star, but I could snap in and within 6 month be an average contributing member.  In others from what I have seen a lot.

But I am not a pure functional.

I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
