Im a college student and this is going to be my future job. Just would like to ask how many Systems Analysts are there on a large organization. 3? 6? 9? I have no idea. All I know is that a small organization can have just one System Analyst. Also a source told me that there are atleast 40 Systems Analyst in an airline organization. Is that true?
Not True ...
NitWitNick is correct when he says there is no single answer for this question. But let me try to give you a different perspective. These numbers are ball parks so while they may vary significantly from company to company at least it will give you an idea.
Most small companies might not even have a formal systems analyst role. If you work for a tech startup the company may grow to the size of 20-50 before they even consider bringing on a System's Analyst. So how do they get by? Well, the developers and team managers kind of fill the gap and perform systems analyst duties. Often developers are asked to do it all...business analysis, systems analysis, coding and testing (throw in a bit of usability as well). This isn't ideal but for small teams its the reality.
In non-technology companies it's even worse, because they may have only a handful of Tech employess to managed their networks and applications. So likely they don't have a systems analyst until the tech team alone reaches more than 20 people.
In larger companies with clearly defined technology organizations you might find something like 1-analyst per 3-6 developers per 1-qa person. Again, these numbers can vary pretty dramatically but this gives you an idea. Of course, they also had IT management which didn't really fall into this breakdown. Large companies can have 10s of thousands of IT people. So you can do the math. That's a lot of analysts.
