Good day
I would appreciate some advice on which UML / Enterprise Modeling tool to use for a medium to large enterprise. I am looking to implement a tool accross a team of BAs, Data Architects, and Developers. Data is our core business, in a mainframe / data warehouse environment, with multiple user interfaces, mainly Natural development.
Thanks Justin
Hi Justin,
Try Enterprise Architect from www.sparxsystems.com
I've been using it since 2008. Great tool and very cheap. starts at about $100 a seat for a single user license.
I should say I have no affiliation with sparx except as a user of their product.
Kimbo
Thanks Kimbo EA is also my preference. I haven't used Aris or Rational Rose, but on price comparison EA is more practical and it's a great tool. Thanks for the confirmation.
Enterprise analysis requires a heavy emphasis on the essential INTERRELATIONSHIPS between functions/processes. This is true even when the ultimate goal is effective data modeling - as an understanding of essential functionality is required to flush out essential data elements.
A very big problem with the UML is that it pretends that essential interrelationships for functions/processes (i.e., data flows) do not exist.
My suggestion: Do not think first of what tool to use. Think first of what tasks need to be done AND THEN think of what tool best support required tasks.

g'day Tony,
EA does DFDs and ERDs too. Why don't you give it a go yourself?
