What does it take to become a Business Analyst?

 Hi

I have a degree in Accountancy and currently working in the Financial Industry Banking to be precisley.I am very keen to change a career and become a Business Analyst.

I was wondering if you guys can advise me as to what exactly do Business analyst do on a daily basis.I have heard people talking about Requirements Documents , BRS , DRS ,Scope of Work , Business Case and other interesting terms. Could you guys unpack these terms and advice step by step where do you begin doing your analysis as BA and documentation involved or maybe refer me to a Site where i can learn more about the role of BA.

Thanking you in advance for your expert advise.

Sibusiso

Sibusiso,

Your name reminds me of my god-son, Sifiso!

As with most professions, I’d say speak to BAs and read up on the topic. This website recommends a few good books;  purchase 1 or 2 and get the rest from University Libraries. Later embark on a course to re-enforce you newly acquired knowledge. Familiarise yourself with the BA process, then you’ll be able to context Requirements Documents , BRS , DRS ,Scope of Work , Business Case. Each of these deliverables fit into a process.

In essence the business analyst is a problem solver. To do this s/he requires soft skills, like good communication and writing skills; and hard skills, like modelling of data and process; and managing the BA process. Oh yes, and some good management skills (getting the job done within time). A good negotiator, you’ll need to negotiate at time for resources.

I’m not that keen on the IIBA, I find all that information overwhelms and confuses the new aspiring BA. But like any good consolidator in a fragmented market the IIBA are doing a very good job. Find some local Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in your area and learn from them.

All the best
K

The business analyst career stands out because it quietly introduces you to the software development industry. It also provides you the opportunity to use more of your communication, relationship-building and data-analysis talents.
