The BAD BA
Modified By Craig Brown on 3/4/2008 9:35:11 PM)

I saw the thread the Good BA and thought it might be interesteting to discuss what makes a bad BA.  Here are a couple of thoughts from me and I look forwad to other people's points of view.

A bad BA...

  • Is focused on communication via documents
  • Assumes knowledge of the business and dictates requirements to the stakeholders
  • Knows the solution before the problem is generally agreed
  • Addresses the technical problem space but doesn't deal with managing people through change
  • Is managing their work to the objectives of the project manager, rather than the project sponsor or client

More?

Re: The BAD BA

Here I want to add some more!

A bad BA.........

  • Unable to draw out clear line between What & How of a solution.
  • Uses to much of vocabulary in documentation.
  • Always try to draw out perceptional barrier in proposing solution.
  • Ignores alternate solution/s if he/she knows it exists.
  • Presents a lucid solution in more vague manner.
  • Will forget the user consideration before or at the time of proposing solution.

Re: The BAD BA

A bad Business Analyst:

  • has poor communication skills,
  • does not know how to listen,
  • lacks analytical skills,
  • is not a facilitator,
  • gets lost in the details,
  • does not have many "tools" in the toolbox,
  • stopped learning a long time ago
  • hates being a BA and is in it only for the money.

Re: The BAD BA

A bad BA:

  • does not try to bridge the communication gap between the programmers and the business
  • assumes s/he knows everything about the problem at hand and does not ask questions
  • listens but does not hear what the stakeholders are saying
  • does not prioritize the requirements from stakeholders'  point of view

Re: The BAD BA

A bad BA is a very enthusiastic person, performs few sessions with the client, consumes a lot of time analyzing the requirements depending on his own logic, develops his idea based on standards and optimal work and ... forgets what the client currently really needs!

I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
Now, I know, I don’t know what kind of new intro BPO may require, but at least I can promise you upfront that I have something different to say about Business Process Outsourcing or simply BPO. What is it? This hasn't been a call center job or a sales job as we all think. It is a mammoth profile, and firms are grappling to ge...
