Business Analyst skillsets

Hi there!

I have 2 years of business analysis experience in application development in sectors

like: Human Resourcec & Retail, now want to switch some other domain like finance

or healthcare. Now the question is that will domain knowledge will play pivotal role

here as my qualification is B.E (Comp sc.) and MBA (IT & systems).

Any Suggestion please!

In my opinion, domain knowledge/vertical industry knowledge is NOT what is most relevant in an analyst. When I interview and hire analysts I look for strong analytical skills and knowledge of various methodologies and industry best practices. The thought is that if you have a strong analyst, they will pick up the domain knowledge as the go. A good analyst needs to be able to extract requirements from areas they know nothing about. That’s why we talk to subject matter experts.

Granted domain knowledge is a benefit most of the time (though I have seen it be a hindrance since many analyst “think” they know the domain and make poor assumptions that they don’t verify), but its not a requirement for me.

Unfortunately, not all hiring managers think this way. Your best bet is to keep interviewing for positions in the industry you are looking to gain experience in until you land that first job. Then it will get much easier.

If you have a strong interest in Finance, follow the stock markets regularly, and understand financial instruments and how to measure them, then you will have an advantage. This is probably the easiest domain knowledge to pick up because the world revolves around the markets and information is readily available. Take the time to know and be able to explain the difference between earnings and revenue, and what are EPS, P/E, book value, etc.
