Looking for some guidance.

I am a recent university graduate looking to get into a business analyst role. First a little backgroud. I have done my Bachelor of Business Admin with a Finance specialization from a reputable University here in Toronto, Canada. I also have a diploma in business admin from a college as well. Currently I'm working @ IBM as a Technical Support Representative where I support software and hardware issues for a client. I user various tools such as Citrix XenApp, IBM Tivoli Service Request Manager, Loutus Notes and VMWare.

I would like to know how I can go about becoming a BA. Are there any specific courses I should take, any programming languages I need to know? I don't know any BA's myself to ask for advice. Any help will be greatly appreciated! If there more info you need to know please feel free to ask :)

First you should know about the BA roles and his resposibilty

The business analyst work closely with customers to understand their business model, requirements and translate them into software requirements document. Specifically, the responsibilities would include:

Assisting with the business case.

Gathering the requirements.

Analysis and Documentation

Implementation

Development

Processing the change request.

You can join any Business analysis training program which is approved from 'IIBA, International Institute of Business Analysis

The course should be  evaluated and approved by IIBA, so you get both training as well as valid certification. Business analysis course is based on Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK Guide) version 2.0 which involves theory, practical, case study, project and assignments.

After getting an experiance of 3-4 year as Business analysis you can go for the certification of CCBA OR CBAP.

Re: Looking for some guidance.

Thank you soo much Manish!

I have enrolled for a free demo BA Intro course which I will be evaluating and then taking if I feel it will give me BA exposure. My only concern is that I don't have any project exerience in the field and so even if I do take any BA training program, the program will be useless without the actualy experience.

I have been looking for Junior BA jobs but have not had any success in landing a job because most do require some exerience. So, my question now is, how can I start with getting the required experience if nobody will give me a chance because, I don't have experience in the first place. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place!  Please help...

Re: Looking for some guidance.

 Hello,

To get started as a BA you need to prepare ypurself step wise. Training shall be taken and you should be careful with what you are getting into.

I will give you an example of our course BA bootcamp that prepares freshers for the BA job.

1. 1st step is to learn the basics of Business analysis. We do that with lots of case studies that help students understand what they will get hen they start working. Lot of the courses that you get in the market teach theortical concepts and do not cover the practical aspects. Our trainers take actual projects and teach students how to write various requirements in the class for those projects. Our clients have called us back lot of times to tell us that our students know a lot more than other BA's working in their company.

2. 2nd step is to prepare for mock intervies. You have to start speaking the language of a BA and mock intervies prepare you for that,Our students feel that almost 99% of the questions were covered as part of the mock interview sessions. You should be prepared to that level before going for interviews

3. 3rd step is to make sure that yuour resume is right for BA market. We screen the resume of our students and make sure that it is suitable as per the latest trend in the market.

If you follow these steps, you will definitely secure a job as a BA. Let me know if you have any other question

Thanks
