G'day from Australia!

Hello All,

I've been looking to join a forum for awhile now to share thoughts and ideas about the BA world and to learn from others. Looks like I've found a great site. Hope we'll have lots to chat about.

Cheers

Hi - Im a BA in the UK planning to spend a year (and hopefully more) in Australia at the end of this year.

I would be really grateful for any tips on getting work in Australia....any advice you have about recommended qualifications or experience I should try before coming over would be gratefully received!!!

Re: G'day from Australia!

I did this trip from the UK in 2000. The way you go about finding jobs is pretty similar to how you do it over here. Register with the recruitment agencies and they will match your skills to the roles they have on their books at the time. The big names area ll out there - Michael Page, Robert Walters etc. A few tips:

1. Ensure you get your visa organised well in advance & remember there's an age limit

2. Australia is pretty small relative to the UK and the contracting market is limited. If you want a professional role Sydney is definitely the best place to go. The other options are Melbourne, Perth and Cairns in that order

3. It takes about a month to sort out accommodation, register with agencies, attend interviews, set up bank accounts etc. Plan your finances to support you through this so that you don't have the stress of finding work immediately.

There are only 9 months to December which isn't particularly long. Without knowing your skills and education it's not possible to make a recommendation of what you could do to improve your chances of finding work. I'm a qualified accountant which helped me secure my roles there (at an insurance company AMP and the financial services broker Salomon Smith Barney) but that's a 7 year training program. If you have any experience in projects then I'd probably suggest Prince2 as a good foundation qualification. However I'm expecting the labour market to become very tight for the next few years and contracting jobs tend to be the first to go. Unless you have significant savings that you can live off you may want to consider the timing of your trip as finding employment could be difficult. That said, good luck. I had a wonderful year in Oz and wouldn't have changed the experience for anything :o)

Re: G'day from Australia!

The two leading jobs boards are www.seek.com.au and www.mycareer.com.au.

The job market is tightening up right now, but skilled and experienced people are still in demand.  It may get worse, but who knows.

Something to note - seasonality.  Getting a BA jon between December and January will be tough.  We are all on holidys.  You need to be in the job market from September or wait until February.
