Should BA be restrict to one domain

Hi All

I have total 4.6 years of exp as BA, and i have worked on Insurance domain for all most 4 years and currently i am working on Project Management domain.

But is it necessary that a BA should restrict himself/herself to a particular domain? I have worked in 2 domains, but every time i appear for interview the first question which is being asked to me is "Why you have changed your domain?" And by mistakenly if i am appearing for same domain where i have worked then questions gets changed "Why you want to re-work in this domain again?"

Regards

Re: Should BA be restrict to one domain

Vineet,

You might be the best BA under the sun; but the buyer, who knows nothing of BA skills etc but who knows a lot about the domain, wants domain knowledge. Its for this simple reason that the Business (who buys BA resources) wants you to have at least some domain knowledge. In my opinion there are three types of BAs: 1) the truelly specialist BA who can work in any domain (a rarity); 2) Product business analyst - eg. SAP MM BAs ( see lots of ads for this type) and 3) domain specific BA - those who have worked in the finance, logistics and utility domains etc. These are the three generic types that are advertised for. The buyer of services dictates what the market wants!

When IT is the buyer of services, they normally ask for either 2 or 3 (or combination); when the business is the buyer of services they ask for 3 and sometimes for 1.

Hope this helps.

warm regards,

K
