is being a CBAP making a difference?

Just had a look at recruitment and 4 jobs mention CBAP. But has it made a difference for the job seeker, recruiting firms and employers? Whats your experience?

Re: is being a CBAP making a difference?

I haven't seen it make a material difference yet.  At some point I believe the CBAP will become as ubiquitous as a PMP but with only some ~1200 CBAP recipients in the world currently (last published list by IIBA had 1047 recipients in Oct 2010) I don't think it will become a mandatory requirement anytime soon.  That said, having the designation could be a differentiator for  those that currently have it.

I personally hope that the IIBA maintains some stringent level of verification on ensuring that claimed hours are actually Business analysis relevant going forward; I would hate to have the designation devalued by allowing people who have never actually been a Business Analyst to receive the designation.

Larimar,

I’m surprised that certification momentum is so slow. My guess is that the IIBA needs to find the “happy medium” between “what IIBA/CBAP delivers” and “market expectations/Buyer of services”.  The original IIBA BABOK was just too complex for the “buyer of BA services”.

In my experience the Business (not IT) is the “buyer of BA services”, and the BABOK and CBAP are beyond their understanding. The PMP is different. The Business is the “buyer of project management services” and the business has an understanding when a project is late and over budget. By default, IT becomes the “buyer of BA services” and constrain the CBAP to an IT domain. Whereas the PMP can work on non-It related projects; it appears that the CBAP will, in the short term, be confined to IT, which for a BA is NOT good! Most of my BA experience, as an MBA, has been with the Business who directs IT to provide enabling services!

I share your hope that the IIBA protects the CBAP 'brand' and continues its stringent varification processes. But to get the Business to value the brand, its going to be a new ball-game!

Warm regards,

K

Re: is being a CBAP making a difference?

I agree that the origination of the official BA role in the IT field makes it an uphill battle to gain awareness in the rest of the organization.  The IIBA should be (if they're not already) be working on building awareness with business executives to help spread the understanding of the value of BA services (I wrote an example of how to present the value of BAs last year).   This will increase demand for BA services beyond IT but it will likely take a good number of years.

Re: is being a CBAP making a difference?

I'm not a recruiter...just a contractor out in the IT World.

I was certified to take the CBAP test a year ago and my chance to take the test will expire in a month. After reading the CBAP BaBok and other 3rd party books off-and-on for the last year, I kinda lost interest in it. It just seemed overly complicated for what I've been doing in real life.

I have a PMP with a heavy Technical Programming / Relational Database background and do all kinds of contracts that require lots of end-to-end project work...and no one has asked for the CBAP yet...however, I am starting to get more interview questions on working in Agile / Scrum environments  (Product backlogs, sprints, user stories...etc.).

Also, during the last month or so a new Project Management Certification came out for Agile (PMI-ACP)...and that is where I'll put my efforts...because with the newer interview questions about Agile / Scrum, it appears that is where the industry may be heading....including learning some of the newer Project Management software for Agile (Instead of MS Project).
