I recently took a position with a Fortune 100 company as a BA. Currently, there is a PM on the app dev project and a recently hired Product Analyst (started the week before me.) The PA will only be on this specific project, while I will be on multiple projects. We are currently in process of defining roles and responsibilities.
Has anyone worked on a project with a PM, PA, & BA before? Thanks for any help and insight you can give.
Hi there,
So in short, the following apply:
Project Manager (PM) – responsible for managing the project. HE or she oversees and removes project problems, manages the budget and acts as the overall GoTo person for the project. They are also responsible for reporting to Stakeholders and Senior Management.
Product Analyst (PA) – They are very similar to a BA, but they are responsible only for understanding the product and putting it together. So, by this I mean how the PRODUCT works – not any system or App it sits on.
Business Analyst (BA) – Is responsible for everything in terms of requirements the PA isn’t. I.e. the App or system it sits on, how someone navigates to it etc. You will also be responsible for other functions of the App, processes if the App doesn’t work etc etc.
The BA and the PA should work closely together as their requirements will overlap. Ideally sit together if you can. Have regular meetings to make sure you are on the same path.
More often than not you may well find that, outside of this project, you act as both a PA and an BA. Maybe even a PM as well.
I found interesting article about project managers and their responsibilities. Here it is: https://freshcodeit.com/freshcode-post/why-you-need-project-manager-or-how-to-stay-on-budget
