Next Step?

Hello everyone.  I am very interested in persuing a career as a BA and I'm wondering if anyone can give me a recommendation to keep me on the correct path.  Here's a breif history of my professional career:

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics back in 2003.  Currently I am working as the operations manager in the family business.  During my time here I've served as the project lead and the system administrator for the purchase, implementation and administration of our enterprise solution.  About 8 months ago I went back to school to persue my MBA.  As part of my MBA I am currently taking an MIS course which has opened my eyes even further to the career.  My only fear with persuing the BA career is that as of yet I have no formal IT training, although I have picked up a lot of first hand experience and I feel I am fairly computer savy.

This brings me to right now.  I currently have about 16 months left before I attain my MBA.  My school is also discussing the idea of offering a four course study in SAP software that is ment to prepare students to take the business anyalst certification exam.  I am going to seriously consider taking those courses after completing my MBA.  In the mean time is there any suggestions you would make for me to continue to advance my learning and experience?

Re: Next Step?

Hi Frank,

It sounds to me that you are on the right path to becoming a strong business analyst.  While having IT knowledge is an asset for any business analyst it is not a requirement.  If your goal was to be an IT Analyst or IT Business Analyst (aka Systems Analyst) then you would want to ensure that you have IT knowledge.

It looks like you are business focused so you are on the right path.  Your role as a BA will be to help the business solve specific business problems and to improve the business processes.

You might also consider taking some of the short Business Analysis courses offered by many of the training vendors.  This will provide you with an even better understanding of the profession and allow you to adjust your career path as appropriate.

See the Training Course Directory for more details.

Re: Next Step?

Thanks for the tips.  Like most other areas of this site, the training course directory seems to have a wealth of information.
