Change for profession from QA to BA

Hello Everybody,

I'm a new member to the modernanalyst forum. I found the threads and blogs very interesting here and that prompted me to join. I'm currently working as a Network Test Engineer for a Telecom Giant in US. I have been into QA/Testing for the past 3 years. I did my masters in EE with a major in Wireless comm. All my prior work experiences are purely in the field of Telecommunications. At this point of my career i see no growth as a QA/Test engineer and want to make a shift. I want to move to the field of Business Analysis and hopefully Telecom Business analysis owing to my vast experience and profound knowledge in Telecommunications.

Although my current project (as a consultant) would only end after 6 months i think this is the right time to prepare myself for the move. I want to know what are the qualifications required to make a move so that i would get a job after 6 months.. I am ready to take up a course. I live in NJ so suggestions/advises are greatly appreciated. I have a started off by reading the BABoK by IIBA..  So to put it short: what should i do to prepare and market myself for a Business analyst position.

Thanks a lot

HK

Re: Change for profession from QA to BA

Dear HK,

It looks like you are on the right track given that you are already reading the BABOK and looking for ways to start your new career as a business analyst.

Sticking with an industry in which you already have experience is a very good idea - at least until you gain some practical business analysis experience.

I would suggest you join the local chapter of the IIBA as well as consider taking one or two courses in business analysis.  It is very important for every newcomer to our profession to have a good foundational understanding of the role of the business analysts, the types of activities that a BA performs, and the types of tools and techniques available to them.

Good luck in your journey!  Keep us informed on your progress...

- Adrian

Hi

Here are a couple of Business Analyst Workbooks that you can purchase on lulu.com for 25.00.  One is an Introduction to Business Analysis and UML and the other is a book of Business Analysis Templates.  These books are a great start for developing business analysis skills.  You can go to the link to preview.  They follow the body of knowledge standards.  Links are below:

Re: Change for profession from QA to BA

Hi:

Most dedicated tester do systems-level black box testing.  If that is what you did, you are largely already qualified as a BA.   The difference between a system-level tester and a BA is largely that the tester, in his\her test cases writes: "Verify that the system does X."     Whereas, the BA, in the functional spec writes "The system shall do X."

Minor difference to be sure.     I which case, I would really focus on your resume writing.   You can legitimately re-word you resume in "BA" lingo.

Tony
