The IIBA BABOK Version 2 is ready for public review
Modified By Adrian M. on 4/3/2008 12:03:34 PM)

Membership,

For those who don't know me - my name is Perry McLeod. I am an MA.com Core Member, and a member of the IIBA since isn't inception. I currently serve as VP of Certification for the Toronto Chapter. I am also on the team of reviewers of the Business Analysis Body of Knowlage (BABOK). The official version is still v1.6; however until May 15, 2008 we are allowing the public to download a draft of version 2 for your personal review.

As I read through the many forms on this site I see many questions that could be answered by the BABOK. I also see many inconsistent answers; many of which have been clairfied by the BABOK.

Now is your chance to give some feed back to the IIBA the the committee responsible for the BABOK. We are trying to build a standard, much like PMI - but we can't do it without your help.

When wondering how to do this, or how to do that I really encourage you to pick up and read the BABOK it is fast becoming the defacto way to govern ourselves as professionals.

For those new to the business it really is a must read. When someone asks me the difference between Business requirements and Functional requirements I am often forced to say have you read the BABOK yet?

If you had, you'd know that a functional requirement is intended to focus on WHAT the system does by way of discrete functionality geared towards the production of a BUSINESS result or deliverable. IT IS A BUSINESS requirement folks.

Sorry but I get upset when I read 'seasoned professionals' giving poor advice to the newbies out there.

PLEASE PEOPLE READ THE BABOK! Let's all be professionals working on the same page with the same set of core beliefs and sets of knowlage.

Until May 15th you can download a PDF at http://www.theiiba.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Version_2_0

Remember we are still working on this book - but I do highly recommend you read it and provide your feedback.

Thank you for your time

Perry McLeod, PMP

Re: The IIBA BABOK Version 2 is ready for public review

First of all, glad to hear the BABOK has been updated.  I am looking forward to reviewing the new version as I move towards CBAP certification.  Do you know how long it will be valid to write the CBAP on V1.6?  I've already started studying for the exam with a local study group, but I don't think I'll be ready (i.e. have enough hours) until sometime in 2009.

I'm a little interested by your assertion above that a Functional Requirement is a Business Requirement.  According to BABOK V1.6, business requirements are "higher-level statements of the goals, objectives, or needs of the enterprise. They describe such things the reasons why a project is initiated, the things that the project will achieve, and the metrics which will be used to measure its success" while functional requirements "describe the behavior and information that the solution will manage. They describe capabilities the system will be able to perform in terms of behaviors or operations – a specific system action or response".  To me these would seem to be separate concepts, and that a functional requirement cannot be considered a business requirement using the above definition.  Perhaps these definitions have been substantially changed in V2.0, or is there something else I am missing?

I think I was the first person to state that there is a difference between business and functional equirements (in this thread.)

Perry is right, all requirements should be servicing the business problem.

I believe I am right also; there is a heirarchy of requirements.  Think of a Venn diagram with each layer sitting inside the one above.  I have posted this image at the Better Projects blog (here) of you want to take a look.

Hi Perry,

I'm the founder of Community of Analysts in Russia (CAR). I communicated with someone from
Body of Knowledge Committee and asked him to translate BABOK in Russian. But he said we can do it once version 2 is released. And now it happed. And CAR would like to ask opening IIBA chapter in Russia. Who should I contact to discuss it with?
