New to the group and a question
Hi, I'm currently working in a dual role of technical writer/business analyst. My degree is Computer Information Systems. What is the difference between a Systems Engineer and an IT Business Analyst? Does a BA ever become a Systems Engineer? Thanks, Pam

Re: New to the group and a question

 Hi Pam:

I don't hear the term 'Systems Engineer' thrown around a lot anymore - what exactly do you want to do for work?

Any career path is possible - it just depends on leveraging what you have done before and are doing now to find opportunities to transition where you want to go. It sounds like you possibly want to do more technical work, possibly programming. If that's the case it's about showing you have the required skills and can apply them.

Re: New to the group and a question

A business analyst understands both the business and how technology is applied to it and thus has a working knowlege of both areas. I don't know what a systems engineer is. Any job with the title containing engineer is regulated in the United States by all 50 States and that is not one of the legal titles so I would stay away from it.

Re: New to the group and a question
Sorry I missed these posts. In the interim time since I originally posted, I learned that a systems engineer is like a BA, but with both mechanical and software experience. I work in a mechanical environment, which is very different from a software environment. Software at my company drives machines. We have mechanical, electrical, controls, and software. So, even though I have BA experience in software, they have opted to hire a systems engineer who will write requirements for both hardware and software.
