Is Business Analyst Position needed in Agile SDLC at all?

Hi all,

I have a question for my experienced fellows business analysts.

I'm studying business analysis and got confused recently.

Forgive me my ignorance, but I don't quite understand how a business analyst position fit into an agile driven project.

I mean, what would be BA's responsibilities in real world situation in real world company in the real world agile project?
How would they be different from those in classic Waterfall SDLC?

Is a BA position needed in agile SDLC at all?

I heard the opinion that "Scrum killed BAs". Is this statement correct?

If somebody had the pleasure to work in both Waterfall and Agile methodologies as a BA, her/his advice would be priceless.

Thank you in advance!

Most sincerely,

Alex

Don't get hung up on a Title or Environment ... Business Analyst / Waterfall, Agile, etc ...

A business analyst in the Agile environment is kind of a product owner and needs to find out if the product is worthwhile, what the product should look like, what it needs to do and then you go do your normal stuff ...

Needs assessments
Planning
Analysis
Validation
Modeling

etc.

Do What You Need To Do To Clarify Stuff and Keep The Project Team On The Right Track.

Agile or W/F or BDD, the task of (i) grasping business needs, (ii) understanding the rational behind the change, (iii) documenting and articulating the requirements to change from current state to future state are inevitable.

So, BA position is needed in any SDLC.

Re: Is Business Analyst Position needed in Agile SDLC at all?

Moses was a Scrum Master who took forty years to get from Egypt to israel because he didnt have any business analysts.  Business Analysts do the up-front work to model the business process, work with subject matter specialists to elicit needed functionality and specify through the models and user stories.  The Analyst transforms user "needs" into specifications that guide the detailed design and build functions.  Having developers work directly with subject matter experts without the Analyst asking "why" and abstracting to patterns and best practices will lead to aimless wandering akin to Moses' time in the desert.
