Please Help. Student Studying HND Computing

Hi

I was reading through the forums and learnt a few things about becoming a system analyst. Im currently doin Higher National Diploma in Computing and was hoping to do a Top up degree to gain a full degree. The things is there are various types of degree surroundin computing such as : Applied Computing, Computer Science, Business Computing as well as Internet and Computing Technology.  I wasnt sure which degree would benefit me the most. I would say I'm more of a business guy ( Business Modelling; SSADM tool, End user & Database)...on the software side Im using Visual Basic...its ok but im not too fond of it.

I would one day like to become a system analyst, I would realy appreciate it if someone could give me some sort of guidance in achieving my goal.
Also, some people do mention that the university you study your degree at also  affects you weather you gain a job or not. I'm a UK student btw :) ( if this site is from abroad) is this tru?

Thanks for reading. Hope to hear from you soon

Re: Please Help. Student Studying HND Computing

Hi Amz

I'm no expert in degree courses as it's some time since I qualified . Since no-one has responded to your question yet (the readership tends to be from the US in the majority), I'll see if I can help.

I've been looking recently to see what sort of courses are being offered as the UK seems to be waking up to providing better courses that reflect the changing landscape in IT. I've been doing some research on the eskills website which lead me to the new style of courses that are promoted by industry as well as the government.

Follow this link and I hope it will help - http://www.e-skills.com/cgi-bin/go.pl/itmb/itmb.html This course style seems to have a focus on more broad project and business skills as well as IT which will definitely position you better for a career as a business analyst.

It may not fit the bill exactly for a system analyst (btw, I prefer business analyst if it's business rather than technical exposure that you want) but I don't believe there are many courses that are so directly focussed on this career path.

Of course, you might find my website useful too as it's targetted at new or developing business analysts - www.businessanalystmentor.com

Hope this helps

Alex
