The new Business Analysis BenchMark report... Requirements Matter

This year's Business Analysis Benchmark report has been published, a survey on the impact of  mature requirements management. I always find it a good read, and not just because I know the author. It really backs up what BAs everywhere are trying to tell their management: Requirements Matter.

Here are some bits that jumped out at me, statements that some may find surprising but are backed up by survey results:

"Requirements maturity may be more important than any other single factor in the determination of overall development effectiveness."

"The notion that the business can produce requirements on its own in the absence of mature requirements definition and management competency is absurd; it is akin to a CFO attempting to prepare financial reports in the absence of knowing Generally Accepted Accounting Principles."

"Poor Requirements Definition and Management wastes 34% of the average organization’s IT Budget."

"Agile, Waterfall, Iterative, Prototyping/Visualization have immaterial performance differences for any given level of requirements definition and management maturity. ... the overall level of requirements maturity has a MUCH greater effect on project outcome than the development method selected."

Like I said: Requirements Matter. To get the report yourself, go to  www.iag.biz/benchmark

When you have a look at the report, come back and we can get a discussion going...

Re: The new Business Analysis BenchMark report... Requirements Matter

David

Another excellent report from IAG.  This series is great.

I have to say I was surprised at the performance by methoology, but let's see how it looks when the sample size scales up on that front.

On the other hand there are no suprises about how important requirements maturity is.  I totally buy the part where it describes how good people can't reach their potential in a bad system.

Everyone - read this and next year participate in the survey.

As Business Analysts in Agile teams, we often hear about Definition of Ready (DOR) and Definition of Done (DOD). But beyond the buzzwords, these two concepts are powerful tools to drive clarity, consistency, and quality in our work. Definition of Ready ensures a user story is truly ready for development. It answers: Is this story clear, feasible...
In today's fast-paced digital world, successful projects aren't just built on great code—they're built on clarity. And that clarity often comes from one key player: the Business Analyst. At the heart of every great product or system is a need—a business goal, a customer pain point, or a regulatory requirement. But busines...
I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
