Looking for some BA tips

Hi everyone

After successfully completing M Sc in Information Technology and Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) and having experience as an Instructor for two years, I am seeking a career position as Systems Analyst where my abilities can be utilized more fully. Additionally, I have acquired an MCSE certification further contributing to my knowledge base and capabilities.

I am new to canada and looking for a position where I can take responsibility as BA/SA and contribute within an IT division

I am confused that where an individual like me target on with respect to nature of the organizations...

I am currently targetting my resume to large organizations like telus,ICBC etc. but i am not getting an interview calls yet. I want to know that what are the primary skills and abilities a BA or SA should have....one should focus on UML, use case modeling techniques or interpersonal soft skills.

For a beginer like me, what extra should i add on my resume that can bring me an interview.

Thanks for your consideration

Tailor your application and resume to the job on offer.

Here is a tip that (being a betting man) I am sure will help.

Tailor your application and resume to the job on offer.

When you are hiring you are looking for a match between your job offer and the skills of the people who are applying.  You don’t want to have to infer or guess whether people have skills from the lists of competencies and qualifications you are sent.

To that end try the following technique;

  1. List all the requirements in the job.
  2. Rate yourself out of 5 on the skill
  3. Assess the size and maturity of the hiring organisation
  4. Assess your ability on (a 1-5 scale) to show your knowledge in a similar environment
  5. Then write about those experiences in your application letter, addressing the strengths but acknowledging the weaknesses and talking about how you are going to manage them.
  6. After applications make follow up calls
  7. After rejections ask for specific feedback

If you have no experience you probably aren’t going to get a gig at a leading software development firm.  Tailor your applications to a level that is achievable.  If you are a beginner maybe look at smaller government departments or not for profits.

As for understanding your specific capabilities as an analyst check off you knowledge and ability to demonstrate your skills based on the IIBA’s BABOK.  You can use the PowerPoint I put together here; http://www.slideshare.net/craigwbrown/ba-skills-and-knowledge-audit
