PMI Announces its BA Certification
Modified By Chris Adams on 5/1/2014 10:57:16 AM)

What's your take on this development? Good or bad for the industry? For the IIBA?

David Barrett, one of the founders of the IIBA, has a good article on the topic:

Re: PMI Announces its BA Certification

 Hi Jarrett

To me its all about industry acceptance. Starting to see requests for CBAP etc in Australia recently but its not mainstream yet. PMP / PMI is very mainstream, so depending on how they handle it, I think that the PMI BA certification might win in the end. It will take a few years. Not sure I care given my age and lack of interest in certification however for people joining the profession or looking to make a career, it puts them in a significant dilemna. Maybe the best thing to do is to wait a year or so to see how it all shakes out.

Re: PMI Announces its BA Certification
Jarett, Thanks for sharing the article from David - he raises some very good points. From my own perspective and experiences as a Senior BA, the PMI approach is very concerning. Requirements definition and management have to remain a business discipline and not a project one. I think the PMI approach could well end up exacerbating the problem they're trying to solve, and will impose artificial project constraints on requirements definition - resulting in unhappy business users not getting what they actually need or want. Requirements should drive the project, not the other way around. One of my favorite quotes is from Kathleen Barret - "Project Managers own the scope of the PROJECT... Business Analysts own the scope of the SOLUTION". This isn't about 'turf wars' between PMs and BAs - rather, it's a recognition that the best interests of the project are not always exactly the same as the best interests of the business. I believe it's essential that we keep 2 separate disciplines - not to segregate them or create conflict, but so that both project needs and business needs can reach alignment and synchronization within a project with both perspectives being considered, championed and represented by a professional dedicated to each discipline. Sandy

Re: PMI Announces its BA Certification
RMP, ACP and SP didn't seem to gain much traction. I don't anticipate this one gaining much either. The only two PMI certifications I have ever seen asked for is the PMP of course and the CAPM which I currently hold.

Re: PMI Announces its BA Certification

I feel like it's a half-hearted entry into the Business Analysis certification arena.  They've listed 10 different sources with which you need to be familiar to sit for the exam, and the IIBA BABOK is not one of them.  It's a slap in the face to the IIBA.  I'll stick with my CBAP.
