Skills and Knowledge for an undergrad or new data analysts

Hi, I am an undergrad studying at Singapore SUTD.
I would like to seek advice on the knowledge and skills needed for a fresh grad data analysis and the modules I should be learning as an undergrad.

I have asked around and was told the following  are the important skills set to obtain:

  1. Problem-solving
  2. Mathematics & Statistics
  3. Data processing using Excel
  4. SQL
  5. Data processing using Python or R
  6. Application of statistics in Python or R

Also, I am currently pursuing a minor in AI which requires me to take an introductory to AI module. However, I am more interested in taking up an Information Retri IR) module compared to an introductory to AI module. As I believe IR would provide skills set and knowledge more valuable to a  Data Analyst compared to the application of AI.

Hence, would like inputs comparing IR to AI and which skills would be more applicable for the career as a data analyst?

Also would forgo the minor would affect my employability as a data analyst?

Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you guys soon

Re: Skills and Knowledge for an undergrad or new data analysts

Hi there,

I am a BA Manager based in the UK. I read your post with interest as the skillsets you mention are common for people new to the role to state.

My person opinion would be:

1. Requirements Gathering - asking people what they want, how they want it etc.

2. Problem Solving

3.. Good mathmatics and good ability to analise and understand data

4. Understand how a number of Data Analsis tools work (they largely do much the same)

5. SQL and any other program language are probably not critical to know, but will certainly help you.
