Which Domain is the best for a BA for work life balance?
Modified By Chris Adams on 6/11/2017 5:21:05 PM)
Hi My name is Gautam. I am a mid-level BA. I have been working for several companies in NJ as a contract BA. All my jobs were related with security functionalities. My first job I worked for a Global investment bank. My manager was asian and treated me very badly. Did not allow me to work remote. Made me work 8-10 hours. No overtime. Counted my lunch time and bathroom time. I was depressed. After that contract ended I worked for a Pharma company.

I loved that job. No stress. Great worklife balance. Unfortunately the contract ended and I ended up working for  a financial company. Great company as well. Only issue was there was no  full time position available. So I made a stupid mistake by leaving the contract for a contract to hire position opportunity in a healthcare insurance company. The healthcare company has turned out be like my experience in the global investment bank.

Worklife balance is very important for me. My wife doesn't drive and I have to pick up my two children from school. Also working remote atleast 2-3 days a week would really help me. I am looking to make a change and go to a company that gives moderate work, non-stress environment, ability to work remote and does not micromanage. I would be willingly to take a lower salary. My health is more important. I have recently developed many stress related problems.  Can you experienced BAs suggest specific companies or sector ex pharma, retail, transport etc that would provide the best worklife balance?

Go contracting. I've been contracting since 1993. I get the number of hours written in the contract and anything else must be paid. I sometimes work extra if I think I've taken too long to do something but that's rare. Some companies here in Sydney are notorious for asking for extra unpaid hours. I haven't worked for them yet. Been interviewed and told them I'd be happy to work the extra hours if the pay reflected my usual hourly rate.

Btw, if the project needs it and the deadline is real, I'll work longer hours as long as I'm either paid for it or get time off in lieu. That's reasonable. Give and take on both sides.
