BA's role in Application Upgrade Project.

Hello all,

I have been asked to involve in application upgrade project recently. (Upgrading to new version and migration to new database). I was wondering what will be the BA's role in the system upgrade project. Most of the technical requirements are already recommended by the vendor, so I am wondering what should be the contents in my BRD if I am asked to make a BRD. What should be the BA's approach in such a project.

I appreciate your valuable recommendation.

Thank You,

hi Karma,

Ask the business what their requirements are. They may have requirements that will help with configuration of the application or requirements on the migration.

"application upgrade project  (Upgrading to new version and migration to new database) "

Have you identified any in-house developed programs, reports, etc. that may be affected by the new database?

I have seen systems that changed database field names with updates and relocated some fields to other tables.

One system that did this was the MORTRAX software ... for mortgage lending.

Re: BA's role in Application Upgrade Project.

Nick,

Thanks for the comment. What I take out of your comment is I need to know or document the reports we are generating today. As like yours it is investment and mortgage loan management software.

Actually there is no in-house developed programs.

This is out of support application upgrade project. We are buying new servers and it will be toally different architecture, it will be  3-tier vs 2 tier ( today) .

My struggle here is what should be BRD be like in case we have to install this new application no matter what before the expire of application support even though we don't know what are the new features and functionality of the new version and change in the process because of the the new upgrade.

I hope my concern makes sense to you. Thank You again for your valuable time.

Re: BA's role in Application Upgrade Project.

Kimbo,

Thanks for the comment. What I take out of your comment is I need to know required functionality and business process  as of today.

This is out of support application upgrade project. We are buying new servers and it will be toally different architecture, it will be  3-tier vs 2 tier ( today) . The software installation, migration of data, and testing is supported by the vendor and they are doing that for us according to the SOW.

My struggle here is what should be BRD be like in case we have to install this new application no matter what before the expire of application support even though we don't know what are the new features and functionality of the new version and change in the process because of the the new upgrade.

I hope my concern makes sense to you. Thank You again for your valuable info.

Sincerely
