Business Process Analysis vs Business Requirements

 Hi there

I am starting out as a BA and was just wondering if someone could explain the difference between Business Process Analysis / documentation and gathering Business Requirements?

Thanks and have a nice day :)

Re: Business Process Analysis vs Business Requirements

 Hello drestar89

It’s great that you have mentioned you are a new comer to the world of BA. It’s a very exciting career path I must say, so well done for coming on board.

First of all the advise I give to Junior BAs when they are stuck either with BA terms or an approach is to utilise a BA reference text book or simply Google the term and it will give you a starting point.

Business Process analysis is simply the analysis of an organisation’s business processes in order to improve it.

Documentation is when you have to document your analysis using various BA techniques and tools i.e.  Process mapping. The documentation will detail the As Is process as it is now and then the To Be process which will take into consideration the improvements to the processes.

In the end the document will have to be signed off by various stakeholders within the project you may be working on.

Gathering Business Requirement: Is simply the process you take in capturing the information that has led to identifying / defining the As Is and the To Be process and also what the stakeholders want from the whole initiative. Often done via one to one interviews, workshops, presentations etc

I hope this helps.
