Picture a large CRM project which involves IT and process engineering. A bunch of business analysts and another bunch of business process analysts. What do you tackle first? Requirements or Processes?
I would begin with asking the stakeholders about the current and future state and move on to documenting the business process. Keep in mind that these discussions would also lead to requirement conversations so both the Business Analyst and Business Process Analyst need to be involved from the start till end.
When working on a new project, I generally approach gathering requirements through uncovering the business processes. The requirements come out of the information gathered for the processes. I also ask extra questions so I can gather both.
My requirements spec always has a section at the front for business processes.
This approach has worked well for me for 20+ years.
If I was working on a project with both process and business analysts, as a business analyst I'd probably ignore the fact there are process analysts and just proceed as normal
