Internship

Hi all,

I just had an interview for a marketing firm, for their Business Analysis Internship. At the interview, it was brought to my attention that the company didn't actively have an analytics department, and really needed help in the field. I was shown a couple disorganized spreadsheets on excel, and I knew where and how they could fix or simply tweek a few things, by throwing the information in a pivot table for Gods sake. However, I feel like the company is going to rely on my skills too heavily- I mean, I was trying to be an intern to help my skills develop further, and to acclimate myself in a working environment. Again, I feel like I really could be useful, but I'm also very nervous that I cant handle the work load. Any advice or encouragement would be wonderful.

                                                                      -Thanks !

Re: Internship

Analytics is a super hot field, and is one that BA's will increasingly be expected to help stand up and support. You should consider taking this early opportunity to become an expert.

It all starts with a couple of disorganized spreadsheets in Excel. If you can already think of ways of presenting that data better then you are in a position to add solid value. The rest you can learn as you go along.

As it happens, I just had an article appear today here on Modern Analyst about how to start a metrics capability that you may find helpful to get you started. You can find it here: Five Steps to Prototyping a Metrics Capability for your Business Organization .

Good luck!
