CBAP or CFA

Hi Guys,

I am an MBA and have been in a BA role for over 6 years in Dubai. I recently moved to Canada and found out that I will require experience in at least 2 programming languages in order to get a good job as a BA here. So, i enrolled in a certificate program here which has taught me SAS, SQL and Tableau.

I am just wondering what to pursue after I am done with this program. I have three options:

1. Pursue certificate in SAS and JAVA programming.

2. Pursue CFA (I have education in finance so this would not be new to me)

3. Pursue CBAP

I am confused basically between CFA and CBAP as to what credential will help me land a job in Canada or USA. I also want to know what credential people earn more. Or whether i should ditch both and just start doing Java.

After 30+ years of developing systems ... most of the BA's and Project Managers have a Technical Background ... the language really didn't matter (Assembler, COBOL, RPG, VB, Clarion, Etc.), it was the Front-To-Backend technical stuff they knew and the conversations they could have with all levels of project people.

They knew how to develop applications and databases ... so, they had an Idea of what might be possible or not.

It Is Up To You ...

Re: CBAP or CFA

Hi Saadia

My suggestion would be to pursue CBAP than CFA.

Programming language is never a great option since BA profession doesnt require too much technical knowledge.

It needs good business acumen, ability to see the bigger picture, communicate effectively and proactively work with multiple teams.

Hence like you said the dilemma between CBAP or CFA.

CBAP over CFA since CBAP is the most coveted designation in BA domain.

Comes from the certification body IIBA based in Canada hence most recognized in Canada and USA.

Gives you a good knowledge in BA domain.

Doing CFA may not give you as much ROI as much as CBAP since you already have a finance background.

Another additional finance certification/degree may not give as much benefits as CBAP.

This is my 2 cents on this.

Hope this helps you in choosing the right career path.

All the best ahead.

Regards
Ananya
