Unfamiliar Domain

Hi guys

What is your approach to elicit requirements for unknown and unfamiliar domains? It certainly makes it easier to ask questions when you are familiar with processes etc. but how would you approach about an unfamiliar domain.

Cheers

K

Just because I have 30+ years of consulting ... Does Not Mean I Don't Ask Questions ... I don't know everything, even at sites I previously worked at and came back to do some more work months later ... what was done while I was gone. I want to know about their system, What it does, where are the programs and data kept to review, etc. I've sat with people to see how they use their system and what the problems are and what they need ... GAPS Analysis ... and To-From Analysis ... What is there and the future system. Take notes come up with something then re-ask the users what they think ... more asking, clarification and agreement can get stuff really close first time. Don't Be Afraid To Ask Questions ... You Won't Get Ahead If You Don't. Have Fun

Re: Unfamiliar Domain

Hi Thanks for your response. I should have provided more detail. Problem is the project I am currently working on is non-IT project. It is broadcasting domain and I dont know anything about it to ask the right questions. I am basically relying on SME's to provide me the information . So I was wondering if there is a good technique to do that.

"It is a Broadcasting Domain" I would ask questions to know the station ...

(1) AM / FM.
(2) What is their broadcasting specialty .. Music, News, Talk, etc.
(3) Frequency (what is on your dial).
(4) Where is the transmitter / antennas (usually out in some other site).
(5) Transmitter power, Tube Types.
(6) Station equipment that the broadcasters use (commercial tape machines, recording, phone system to answer callers, delays, etc.)
(7) Engineers ... In-House or a Company.

Figure out what is going on to do more ... Just Ask, set up a meeting with the SME's and find out stuff.

Re: Unfamiliar Domain

Ya no, its nothing like that. Firstly I have been allocated to the project mid-way through the project. Project has been on going for 7 months. Don't really have the facility to understand their processes. I was looking for more on advise on what is the best technique to capture requirements on projects like these
