Excel is good. But having a software can help you to mange the time better.
We used Excel for a Major Bank Merger ... for BA stuff, Schedules, Project Management instead of MS Project or any other software that you had to buy and get additional licenses for ... and it wasn't even a current version of MS Office ... it was a 1997 version used in 2008.
The Project Pipeline (100's of projects) for the merger was in Excel ... and was used to present to the management, business / technical resources and federal regulatory agencies for what was being done and time-lines.
The merger, integration and corporate / product rebranding was a success.
