This article suggest a new perspective on the age-old question of "build vs buy", in the context of embedded analytics software tools. Basically it says that build is not practical for most organizations, whereas "buy" is unrealistic - and generally you will find yourself in some kind of partnership with your BI provider. Build is many times more beneficial than Buy ... you can make it the way you need it.
Buy is almost Never a fit to what you need and you may have to do major modifications to get it to where it fits your company needs ... provided you have access to source code and not have to pay the high rates of any BI provider to do that work.
Several years ago I was doing a health insurance system for a major corporation ... they wanted something new, running on a PC Server ... they bought some package and 3 years later, that package was still being modified by the Vendor to do what the company needed ... finally after millions of dollars were blown, they dropped that project, got rid of the vendor and enhanced their current system in a just a few months ... which is still running.
