Test Use Case Matrix

Hi All,

We are looking at defining some doc templates in our organisation.  One thing that seemed of interest was some sort matrix to be able to match Use Cases against Test Cases as a way of ensuring that all requirements are captured.  Typically we thought that a Use Case can encompass various test cases.  Has anybody tried to implement something similar and how have their experiences been?

Regards,

Anthony

Re: Test Use Case Matrix

Hi:

The essence of creating a systems level Test Case is to specify the inputs to result in a predetermined output.  This sums up what black box testing (i.e., devloping test cases without looking at the code) is really all about.

BIG problem:  With graphical Use Cases, the inputs and outputs are not  identified.  The Business Analyst pretends they do not exist.  Now, the analyst can attempt to document inputs and outpust in supporting text, but, except for very small systems, the I\O really needs to be documented  into the model, else the lack of rigor will cause big problems.  Without rigor your matrix is going to be very incomplete.

Greeting Anthony,

Welcome!

Creating a usecase/test matrix is easily done. Enterprise Architect by Sparx allows you to create a matrix of test elements and use cases as part of the use case realization. Download their evaluation version of the tool at  http://www.sparxsystems.com/ and see the TEST examples. You can also depict the information graphically as use case realizations.

Warm regards,

K

As Business Analysts in Agile teams, we often hear about Definition of Ready (DOR) and Definition of Done (DOD). But beyond the buzzwords, these two concepts are powerful tools to drive clarity, consistency, and quality in our work. Definition of Ready ensures a user story is truly ready for development. It answers: Is this story clear, feasible...
In today's fast-paced digital world, successful projects aren't just built on great code—they're built on clarity. And that clarity often comes from one key player: the Business Analyst. At the heart of every great product or system is a need—a business goal, a customer pain point, or a regulatory requirement. But busines...
I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
