Requirements Validation and Verification 

Needed reccomendation for how others have successfully validated and verified requirements with system SMEs

Successful verification and validation of requirements is dependent on first defining "done."  Your team needs to describe what an acceptable requirement is and then check each requirement against that standard.  Defining the standard is often more difficult than the verification against the standard, in my opinion.  Structured walkthroughs is probably the most common technique, but that can be painful and time-consuming.  I'm a fan of prototyping.
