Requirement Gathering Approach for new system

I have been working as a Business analyst from last 3.5 years , All the projects i have worked were build on existing application, what i mean , i have done requirement gathering & analysis only for the existing application with some enhancements coming around.Now i am moving to a project where all the products/projects are new & short period delivery, how the approach changes when it comes to Requirement gathering for a new application/system/project.Please Guide.
