Please Help me on Exercise of Online Doctor Appointment System

Scenario

Dr Granger has his office (physician’s office) and he sees the patient from Morning to evening. Usually there is a huge queue at his office and the whole process is manual.

Patients either visits or calls them to get the appointment. The appointment is taken down by receptionist. There are also walk-in patients who do not have prior appointments.

Once the patient sees the Dr. Granger office, the receptionist collects details about his past medical conditions. When the patient finally meets the Doctor, he do proper diagnosis based on past medical condition and prescribes the medications.

You arrive at a Physicians clinic. The Physician there wants to automate all the processes that are followed in that clinic.

So the first job is to

1.    Gather requirements by understanding current business models. This will involve Doctor and Receptionist.

2.    A Requirement Specification Document needs to be prepared (BRS - Business Requirement Specification and SRS - System Requirement Specification can also be prepared based on the complexity).

3.    Once the RSD is signed off by the Physician, the Business Analyst then starts preparing the “Use Case” scenario document.

Exercise:

Discovery

1.    Come up with all the questions that can be asked to doctor and their staff.

Ø  What problem is this business having that you hopes to solve by developing this project? (What problems the business is currently facing)

Ø  What inside resources will this project are utilizing? What outside resources will be necessary? (If any of the work is out sourced)

Ø  What risks to you foresee and are you willing to take them?

Ø  Are you under any type of time constraint? There has to be a set time frame for the outcome.

Ø  What is the projected budget and can it be deviated from?

Ø  Who is the end user?

Ø  What support will they have? (End User)

Detailed Requirement

2.    Come up with high level requirement on all the areas

Example: Possible Areas where requirements can be gathered

Ø  Patient Check in (Registration/Reception)

Ø  Physician’s inputs

Ø  Helpers/Nurse Inputs

Ø  Pharmacy

Suggest you walk them through the process from end to end. Start with the happy (usual) path, then capture all the variations. Ask questions along the way like - 'what happens first?', 'What happens next?', 'Who does that?', etc etc. capture all the functions that occur on each step, all the documents, data, business rules, etc.

Then mockup the process (BPMN) and the functionality (user stories, use cases) you need will fall out of that. plus you need to capture as much in terms of data (high level class diagram), business rules. attach copies of their current documents, screen shots etc in relevant places.

I find its a waste of time to come up with anything more than broad brush topics to cover before starting a workshop. The answers will lead you to more questions that you won't have thought of to start with.

good luck,

Kimbo
