Hello Everyone

Hi everyone,

I just joined this forum and wanted to introduce myself.  I have my Bachelor's degree in Business Information Systems and don't know where to go from here. I've been working at the same company for almost 10 years. I started as summer help and moved up but I haven't had any roles that related to that degree for experience. I've tried finding positions with one of the counselor's at my college but to put it nicely it was a waste of time. I wanted to join this forum to see what I can do. I put my resume on the different career/job posting sites but most of the time it ends up being sales jobs or sign up and take our training course which is a dead end. I've just been frustrated because I want to see that my degree wasn't a waste of time and put it to use.

If you were me what step would you take? Any input is welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Hello Everyone

Dear MP5,

First of all, I'm sorry to hear of your struggle to find an IS job!  Hang in there and NEVER give up on achieving your goals.

Having said that, I wonder if you may need to clearly define your goal - in a bit more detail.  You did not define what you want to do with your Information Systems degree.  Such a degree is generic and is only as good as your vision of what you want to accomplish.

  • Do you want to be a QA analyst?
  • Do you want to become a Business Process designer?
  • Do you want to be in the field of business analytics?
  • Do you want to be a Business Analyst?
  • Do you want to be a management consultant?

You're probably thinking: :"Yeah!  I'll take any of those!".

But - the reality doesn't work that way.  You need to set a specific goal and pursue it with passion.  The interviewers for the jobs you are applying for can sense when an applicant is directionless.

Let's say that your goal is to be a "business analyst"...  Is there "evidence" in your life that business analysis is your pursuit?

For example:

  • Your degree was 10 years ago... did you take a class to learn something new since?  Was it business analysis?
  • When is the last time you read a book on business analysis?
  • Are you a member of a local business analysis group such as an IIBA chapter?
  • Are you pursuing a certification in business analysis?
  • etc.

I think you get the point!

You'll need to be honest with yourself and really determine what is your passion.  If you're just pursuing Information Systems for the money you will have a hard time getting there.

What do you think?

Adrian
