ISEB Course, which Provider to choose?
Modified By Rob Roome on 2/16/2009 5:50:20 PM)

I just wanted to start by saying how great a resource I think Modern Analyst is, I joined within the last week and already found a wealth of information!  I'm currently working as a Business Systems Analyst / Tech Lead (5 Years IT, Around 2 Year's solid Analysis Experience), and I'm now looking to move into a full-time BA Role.

To help I'm looking at getting is ISEB Diploma, but I've found myself unable to choose between the various Training Providers!  There aren't many reviews around, so their doesn't seem much to differentiate between them.  Therefore I was hoping that you some of you might possibly be able to share your feedback on the various courses.  In paticular I'm looking at Business Analyst Solutions, Stehle Associates,TCC & Assist Knowledge, as they all provide training in London where I live.

Thank you all in advance!

Rob

Re: ISEB Course, which Provider to choose?

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the Modern Analyst community!  Glad to hear that you're finding it to be a valuable resource.

As far as the ISEB Diploma goes, I don't have much experience in that area but it seems to be a valuable certification with many job posts in the UK asking for it.

Guy Beauchamp, one of our frequent contributors, was involved with Business Analyst Solutions at one point and might be able to provide you with more details.

At the end of the day, what's more important is that you don't get paralyzed by indecision but rather pick one training provider and begin working towards your goal.

Re: ISEB Course, which Provider to choose?

Hi Rob,

As Adrian says, I was a tutor with Business Analyst Solutions before setting up my own training company and I would recommend them for the following reasons:

1. all their tutors are experienced and still working Business Analysts - they can tell you what you need to know to pass the exams and they can also tell you what its like applying business analysis in the real world.

2. Business Analyst Solutions offer what is - in my experience - a unique proposition: their first course is called Fundamentals of Business Analysis. This 4 day course is not a basic course - it just focuses on teaching you what you need to know to be able to do the job. It is very practical with lots of hands on experience of doing the job end to end. There is an optional exta day at the end where you prepare for and sit the ISEB Certificate in Requirements Engineering.

The second 5 day course teaches you what in addition to the Fundamentals course you need to know in order to pass the other 3 certificates for the ISEB Diploma, and during the 5 days you sit each of those exams.

These courses have very high pass rates and delegate satisfaction scores.

Re: ISEB Course, which Provider to choose?

Hi, Can someone clear up what the ISEB actually is? I understand that it is a diploma in BA, but who is it sanctioned and created by? Out of all the diploma's and courses out there is it a good one to do? Does it have anything to do with the IIBA?

Sorry, just a bit confused.

Hi Tankfish,

ISEB is part of BCS (Bristish Computer Society) and for the ISEB Diploma in Business Analysis is the self appointed accreditation standard for Business Analysis. Is it a good one? If by 'good' you mean is it recognised then yes: it is the most widely recognised accreditation in the UK (I do not know how it regarded elsewhere). Having said that I have never seen a job where it is a mandatory requirement to have it and few jobs mention it at all. There have been a few posts about this in the past in these forums...

As far as I know it has nothing formal to do with IIBA - indeed in the sense that they both certify Business Analysts then they could be regarded as in competition with each other.

The entry requirements for doing the IIBA CBAP is higher than for the ISEB Diploma. I have seen no jobs mention the IIBA CBAP qualification by name yet.
