I came from a not IT background.  I was in an operations role (not so rempoved from retail sales) and I got into projects through constantly finding better ways of doing things.  Look for opportunities in your current workplace to reduce cost and increase sales through implementing systems and processes.

A classic example; "Wwould you like fries with that?"
