People Management Resources?
Modified By Jarett Hailes on 7/19/2008 3:17:31 PM)

I was recently promoted to the Business Analyst lead position (4 team members this year, 8-10 next), and I'm looking to refresh my people management skills as I haven't led a team in about 3 years, and that team was mostly developers.  Does anyone have any good resources (books, personal advice, websites, blogs, etc.) relating to people management, particularly within a Business Analyst environment?

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations!

Here are a few random tips/advice:

  • have a clear understanding of what you team's mission and goals are -> communicate those clearly to your team members,
  • make a commitment to look out for the benefit and welfare of your team members -> if they understand that you'll go to bat for them they will, in turn, follow you in battle when you lead them,
  • clearly communicate expectations and then provide feedback on a regular basis,
  • have a plan to continuously increase the skills and proficiency of your team,
  • tell your team (and mean it) that your goal is to be replaced by one of them -> you will eventually want to move to bigger and better things so begin to train your replacement now,
  • know your stuff -> you credibility is key to the success of your team so make sure you are on top of your game by continuously increasing your business analysis skills by not only reading and learning but also by teaching (workshops, brown bag lunches, etc.), mentoring, and writing (blogs, articles, etc.).

Here are a couple of books you might want to consider:

As Business Analysts in Agile teams, we often hear about Definition of Ready (DOR) and Definition of Done (DOD). But beyond the buzzwords, these two concepts are powerful tools to drive clarity, consistency, and quality in our work. Definition of Ready ensures a user story is truly ready for development. It answers: Is this story clear, feasible...
In today's fast-paced digital world, successful projects aren't just built on great code—they're built on clarity. And that clarity often comes from one key player: the Business Analyst. At the heart of every great product or system is a need—a business goal, a customer pain point, or a regulatory requirement. But busines...
I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
