Hi All,

I would like to know how can I get myself in the domain of Business System Analyst. I am Presently working as a Business Analyst (Functional & Process).

My current role involves following responsibilities:Client Interactions: understand  business objectives and processes. Requirement Gathering Sessions: map business processes GAP analysis, & Process Improvement. MS Visio to map Business Processes.

I think this role is more of Process based instead of a role of Business Analyst.

I want to know how I can get myself to the direction of a true role of Business Analyst. Where in I am able to differentiate between the requirements of the client, understand their systems and involve systems team to build a new one or change existing one. Writing Use cases and preparing SRS. Is there any course which I can enroll myself for alternatively, should I be looking for a job change (But the only concern is why would somebody give me a job without Prior experience).

Please share your thoughts & suggestions.

I must say thank you for your reply and apologize that I should have done it months ago.

Actually, I was on a project that involved extensive traveling within Europe and couldn’t stay in touch with this forum.

As we say better late than never, I have gone through your mentioned article and can say it was very helpful.

If I understood your response correctly, the requirement for my career is to become a Business Consultant. I should have skills to manage business processes at both organization level as well as Project level. For me definition of a Business Consultant would be as follows:

Business Consultant = Business Analyst + Business Process Analyst + Domain Knowledge

Since I have been involved in RFPs/RFIs for quite some time I want to have end to end knowledge of Project life cycle which may involve a technical solution.

Correct me if I am wrong in my understanding, a Business Analyst would not only look at the business process but it covers wider aspect of the business. Clients need can range from improving cycle time, reducing cost, right first time etc to venture into a new domain altogether. As a Business Analyst (my current role just business processes) it narrows down my skills just to operation side of it or to business processes.

Since I already hold a full time diploma in Business Management (marketing), my idea is to marry Business Analyst skill set with technical knowledge and add domain knowledge top of it to reach my Goal. I am not sure if my understanding is correct at all but this is what I have gained based on my on the job training or experience.

I would be grateful to you if you can share your thoughts.

In addition, I have another thread in Business and System Analysis>General>Final Verdict, to seek advice on certification from ISEB. Since, I need to enroll myself with training provider very shortly I will be thankful to you if you can share your thoughts on that as well.

In my home country I have not seen any job posting that requires certification or Diploma in Business Analysis. However, the reasons I wanted to go for a certification or diploma is one that I will learn the skills that I missed during on the job training and second that it will help me gain trust of my next employer that I have knowledge of the skill set a BA require.

Thanks for putting in the contact for training provider (www.businessanalystsolutions.com) as well. I had a word with them and found that they are not offering one of the important modules of System Modeling and techniques. I lack the knowledge of this module and wish to go through this module to cover skill set of Business System Analyst.

The only one question that got left unanswered in our previous discussion (I see it was part of second thread) is whether my experience ties with the ISEB Business Analysis Diploma.

I have got over 6 years of experience however relevant BA experience is just 3.5 years. Do you suggest me to go for the Diploma? I am wondering how my next employer sees it. It should not look like as if I have done it for the sake of it.
