Re: Regarding Business Analyst Training and Certificate

Hi Karteek,

Since you are just starting out, I would recommend that you take some classroom training - if you can afford it.  Online courses are a really good way to supplement your knowledge and education if you have a solid base.

An in person, classroom-based training would provide you with the opportunity to meet to other students in person, be part of study groups, exchange ideas with others, talk to the instructor(s) before/after the class.  I would also recommend that, if you find out, take a course which is spread out over a longer duration.  The problem with intensive courses which try to teach you everything in a few days is that it is hard to absorb all the information that quickly.  A course which has longer duration and which, perhaps, meets a few hours each week for a number of weeks would allow you to study on your own in between classes, do homework, and simply better process and retain the information.

There are many training course providers out there.  Check out our Training Course directory.

Sincerely,

- Adrian

Hi Karteek,

As you have asked for votes on classroom vs on-lie training I would like to add my thoughts...

Progressing your career is just like a project in that you have to analyse what you want from your career before deciding on how to achieve it. I have written an article on this called So You Want To Be A Business Analyst.

While I agree with Adrian's points about classroom training to an extent there is another side to this: classroom based courses are intense (well, the good ones are) and it can be challenging to take it all in. They also use artificial case studies to illustrate the learning points.

On-line courses can address these issues (well, the good ones can!). You learn at your own pace, your schedule, and focus on what you need to focus on. More important than that I would suggest is selecting a course where you use your current project as the course case study - that way you get to learn about doing Business Analysis in the real world on a real project and progress your own workload. An example of this would be my company's on-line course to be found here.

You have raised an interesting question on this vote of classroom Vs on-line BA courses and I hope you get more responses!

All the best,

Guy

Re: Regarding Business Analyst Training and Certificate

Karteek,

There are a couple of points to consider...

Training in a classroom provides the opportunity to get hands-on skill and practice while interacting with others. Most classroom training will have group exercises, like role-play, which allows people to bounce ideas off of each other and network. It can also be helpful to hear about problems and successes that others have had in their own job roles. Another advantage, and the one most often cited among classroom trainees, is that classroom training gets you out of office and away from distractions, like emails or phone calls, so you can concentrate fully on your studies.

If your budget is tight on time and/or money, making it difficult to be away from the office, online training is a good alternative to classroom-based training, because you can often complete the course from your home or work. Many times, however, students find they are interrupted by colleagues, get pulled into meetings, feel the urge to respond to emails, etc. If you cannot "turn-off" the outside world, going to a classroom may be a better way to go.

With a good training company, however, the course content should be of equal quality regardless of which method you pick.
