What is the best peice of advice you have had?

As a new BA, I am keen to hear about others learning experiences. So what is the best peice of "learning" you have had as a BA? Maybe it was an experience? A mistake you made and learnt from? A course? Or even just a word of advice?

You mean apart from 'Don't eat yellow snow?' :)

Back in 1990 an old contractor said to me "Try to learn something new every day". Never forgotten it and have always tried to.

Eric:

Best piece of advice I ever got:  It is only by following the flow of data can one obtain an understanding of the underlying logic of a system.

Re: What is the best peice of advice you have had?

Hi. I'm Myles, new to the forums. Been a BSA for 12+ years.

Best advice I was given:

1) Lay your ideas out like a buffet, and make sure your customers understand the advantages/disadvantages of each of their options.

2) Don't expect your customers to accurately state their problem. It's much easier for them to talk about their solution - things they wish a system can do, but their "solution" may not be the right one for their problem and there may be an even better solution out there. You have to help them understand their problem, by listening/observing the problem in action.  On a related note, when I worked at Toyota, they used a Japanese phrase to describe a best practice that literally translated means, "Look. Go. See.", meaning it's not enough to let your customers describe the problem. You have to observe it yourself in order to fully understand what you're trying to solve.
