Dear Members of the Requirements Forum.
I've recently started work in the company developing technical solutions for oil companies. My main spec is eliciting user requirements and creating Requirements Specification. I'm a certified Requirements Analyst, so the actual technical process of gathering, articulating, analysing and documenting requirements is my profession. The only thing is that I've never worked for the company developing software for oil business and know nothing about the oil company domain. Before I start working on upcoming projects, I would like to get to know the strandard oil company domain in order for me to create a work context diagram for finding business events, business use cases and product use cases.Could you please share any ideas where I can find it or may be some of you work in this sphere and can help me.
Thank you so much!
Kind regards.
Lena
Hi Lena,
I can't help you with finding out about the oil industry domain except to say search on the web. The oil business is huge as you know so I expect you'll need to focus on your particular part of it e.g. exploration, production, refining or whatever first.
I just wanted to comment that I think its often a good idea to come to a project without any preconceived notions of what should be done. You are more likely to come up with innovation if you don't know what everyone else is doing. But of course having some idea of the domain will make it easier.
Sorry I haven't been very helpful.
Kimbo
Dear Kimbo,
Thank you for your very useful ideas of not adhering to project initiation preconceptions,I absolutely agree with you, although it normally helps to be armed with general domain knowledge before you embark on the Client interviews, mind maps, business use case work shops....I think ,primarily the projects will be concentrated on the sphere of providing lubricant recommendations to the users' customers/distributors and selling oil products.I will search the web.
Thank you again!
Kind regards,
Elena
