Job Application Predicament - help??
I am looking for some serious help on a current predicament I have in relation to application for a Business Analyst role.

Background on this one is that about 2 years ago after almost 10 years experience with a Financial Services company in a role not directly related  to IT, I approached and had very positive meeting with the Head of IT as to a possible career change to become a Business Analyst. Head of IT gave me some excellent advice as to how to develop my career within current role to gain appropriate experience and also what external qualifications they would look for should any positions come up. He was also very encouraging despite my lack of formal IT Qualifications, I was assured relevant experience already gained plus following development plan and gaining external IT qualification would stand me in good stead for a BA Role. After following the development plan including progressing with external qualification I was unfortunately made redundant within my department, I had several conversations with Head of IT when on notice of redundancy and he kindly spoke to all his mangers within in IT to try to see if any positions were available even referring to my as "the next bright young thing" but unfortunately there was a freeze on jobs at time. On leaving I agreed to stay in contact with Head of IT as to my development for any positions that may come up in future.

I have now been with a different company for close to a year but remained in financial services albeit not IT related and continued with my external IT qualifications. I became aware that previous company  I worked for were recruiting again within IT and duly contacted the Head of IT. He responded and confirmed he would pass my details onto the recruiting manager. After 3 weeks I had not received any acknowledgement and emailed Head of IT to enquire re progress, its now been over a week now and I have had no response from him.

I honestly think my best chance of breaking into Business Analyst role due to lack of IT Degree or BA experience lies with this previous company and by using this contact, who knows my passion to move my career in this area. Do I chase him again re acknowledgement and risk annoying him and losing him as contact??

Thanks for taking time to read this and any advice much appreciated.

Re: Job Application Predicament - help??

Rob,

Not sure how your redundacy package was structured; but normally youre given some extra money and help to get you through the tuff times. The company might even assist you through a third party to get another job. So there is the dilemma of rehiring you and most people that I know who have been made redundant have difficulty returning to their old company. Take it from their perspective, why should they rehire talent which they thought was not "good enough" a year ago. If they rehire you, perhaps its admitting that they've made a mistake in letting you go.

So my advice is, call up the HR at your old company and ask what their rehire policy is with respect to "people-made-redundant". Thats a good start.

warm regards,

K

Re: Job Application Predicament - help??

Thanks for your response.

I  wasnt made redundant as a reflection of my abilities it was the department I worked in was re-structured and work I did was outsourced with no postions of expertise beingretained only adminstration jobs. The only stipulation of with HR if you receieve redundnacy package is you cant return with in a year.

The reason I am so keen to return iis with my experience in this industry and knowledge of the company bearing in mind my lack of IT skills/experience, gives me far and away my best chance of ever breaking into an BA  role. Plus the Head of IT had was helping me to move into this type of role when my development with company was cut short due to the afore mentioned redundnacy. My real question is with them now recruiting for BA roles, how far can I utilise my contact (Head of IT)??? He has already forwarded my details onto recruiting manager but I have not heard anything for several weeks also I chased Head of IT over week ago and no response.

Do I email him again or just sit tight ie playing long game and even if dont secure or hear back re any of these BA Roles just keep with my development and continue to utilise Head of iIT Contact???

Re: Job Application Predicament - help??

Rob,

The IT guy sounds genuine. He might also have some issues at work and fight for his existance (say). Heres what I would do. I'd  apply for other opportunities and use the IT guy as referee. He likes your enthusiams and he would most likely give you a good reference when you approach ANOTHER company.

So send him a note thanking him for his support thus far and ask if hes available as referee for other employment opportunites.

all the best mate,

warm regards,

K

Re: Job Application Predicament - help??

 Hello Rob,

You have a situation that most  most of the people go through trying to get in the field of Business analysis .

honestly think my best chance of breaking into Business Analyst role due to lack of IT Degree or BA experience lies with this previous company and by using this contact, who knows my passion to move my career in this area. Do I chase him again re acknowledgement and risk annoying him and losing him as contact??

I agree and disagree with you on this.

I agree that there is a very slight chance for you to break in this field using this contact of yours. I'm not sure what kind of education you took as a BA that you make this HR guy recommend you for a job as a BA in this economy when there is so much of skill set in the market. If I'm a manager in IT , i would not risk a project by hiring a fresher unless I have worked with the person ( sorry to disappoint you on this )

I diagree with you that this is the only chance for you to get into this field. You can take some formal Business analysis training especially designed for freshers to get in the field. Remember most of the training avaibale in the market is for experience professionals . Basically you would need to learn all the topics/processes of Business analysis

There is a process by which the requirements shall be captured in the project and you should kno all the steps in the process.

For reference: you can look at the training that e offer called as a BA boot camp. You can contact me if you need more info on anything else

Thanks
