Degree to choose?

Hi all,

I am what you call a mature age student. I am 45 years of age and have worked all my life in the equine field. Through circumstances that I will not bore you with, I now find myself working as an IT support analyst in Europe and studying Commerce through external studies with an Australian university.

The question I have; Is it better to do an accounting major which will allow me only 4 electives of IT or an IT major which will allow me 10 electives of accounting? I am planning to begin a career as a Business Analyst and would like some advice on which direction my degree should take to better my chances of finding work given my age when I graduate.

Thanking you all in advance,

Mark

 Mark,

Obvious question is do you want to be an accountant or work in IT? If you want to be a BA, I'd suggest doing systems and business based IT units with one or two accounting electives. Try to avoid programming units with maybe doing just an introductory programming unit so you get a flavour for it.

Hard to say really. Why don't you ask the people where you're working?

Just had a brain wave... why not check out the courses affiliated with the IIBA. see www.IIBA.org. The IIBA does not have much industry recognition yet but they should be able to point you at some BA oriented courses near where you are.

As usual when studying at a university, try to get into one with international recognition. Each country generally has elite universities e.g. US has the ivy league, Australia has the group of 8. Not necessarily that important I suppose but employers generally know the difference.

Re: Degree to choose?

Hi Kimbo,

Appreciate the reply and information provided.

Well I have arrived at a decision, I have decided to change my degree to IT and complete around 8 business units. I will specialise (I hope) in application development.

I guess what I am really looking at is application support and analysis for a financial company, hence the accounting units(as well as my own interest).

Thanks again!

Re: Degree to choose?

 No worries Mark,

Might be worth having a think about where you might want to be in 5 to 10 years as well. Might make you rethink some of the choices you make now.

Good luck with it.

Kimbo
