At a recent presentation I gave to Project Manager's regarding BA's, they were very interested in seeing a Requirements Traceability Matrix, so I have attached the instructions for creating one, as well as for the corresponding Tech Spec Traceability Matrix, typically completed by developers.

I hope this is helpful!

If it has to be MSOffice, I would use Excel .. it provides flexibility to show the traceability matrix from different POV.

Great feedback Les! This document is meant to be instructions on creating a matrix, and at the bottom it indicates to "create a spreadsheet with the following columns and rows." I apologize for not indicating Excel, as it is the most common spreadsheet application. Now I just need to figure out how to update something once it is posted. :)

What would be nice is an article showing how we may use Excel to view traceability matrices from different POVs:

- Business -> System
- Business -> Test
- System -> Test

and vice versa .. all from the same table.

I'd get on it, but I'm busy applying for jobs.

Your form is similar to mine, but better. Could you add a sample row?

Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) is basically to keep track of those valuable elements, which are deemed important to implement that particular project and any subsequent phases (defects, enhancements, etc)

From the business perspective, it ensures business need is satisfied via business processes, use cases, business rules, design, test elements. From implementation perspective, the team can fully see the impact any of the element has across the chain. I have used elements like business processes that are triggering the system use cases, business rules too as part of my RTM. In short, feel free to add element your team thinks is valuable to trace.

Thanks & Regards,

Chetan

Where I am employed as a Junior BA we use Excel to complete requirements matrix. Do you happen to have a sample of one in Excel format for any type of system?
