March 8, 2011  - EDISON, NJ. On March 4, 2011 OpenRules, Inc. announced the launch of the major new Release 6  of its open source Business Decision Management System commonly known as “OpenRules”.   Using OpenRules 6 business analysts can build and execute (!) decision models without IT involvement.

OpenRules 6 effectively removes any programming from the representation of rules and allows business analysts themselves to specify their decision models and rule families directly in Excel.  Business users can define business glossaries and test cases using predefined Excel tables; they can then execute these decision models to validate their accuracy.  Once a decision model has been validated, it can be easily incorporated into any Java or .NET environment.  This process may involve IT specialists but only to map OpenRules business glossary to a specific business object model.  The business logic itself remains completely in the hands of subject matter experts!  See a detailed example and judge for yourself if this is another marketing statement or reality.

OpenRules 6 provides the following key differentiators:

  • No rule languages to learn, no rule coding
  • No proprietary graphical interfaces for rules management
  • No IT involvement in business logic representation
  • Executable Decision Models.

The new release avoids the use of "Java snippets", rule parameters, or even rule templates.  Previous versions of OpenRules supported two views of rule families, Business and Technical.  With OpenRules 6 only a single Business View is needed to express rules semantics and to actually execute the rules.

OpenRules 6 comes with a set of new sample decision models and new manuals:

OpenRules 6 is available for downloads now from www.openrules.com/download.htm. For a nominal fee you may receive a complete version of the Release 6.0.1 including software, documentation, sources, along with access to Priority Support and the Inside Track Program.  You may download a free evaluation version of the latest release as well.
