ANSWER

Paradigm shifts in business analysis most often occur in projects where foundational change is required—typically during digital transformation, system modernization, or major process reengineering.

High-likelihood project types:

  • Greenfield projects: Freedom to define processes from scratch.
  • Reengineering initiatives: Legacy systems replaced with modern architectures.
  • Organizational restructures: New business models or product lines emerge.

Maintenance projects, by contrast, tend to favor incremental improvement.  Recognizing the project context helps analysts adjust their mindset—innovative for new builds, conservative for sustainment.

Understanding where paradigm shifts are most likely and most valuable enables analysts to propose bold ideas at the right time.
