ANSWER

The Yourdon introductory class on data flow diagramming used to (still does?) teach that 98% of the required work in requirements specification revolved around a single task.  What is that task?

Answer:  Coming with an adequate and accurate "As-Is" functional model.

I can see how this might be the case if we consider that the act of creating an "As-Is" model is really understanding how the entire business works: all the processes and all the data flows. In addition, the business analyst is probably gathering the requirements at the same time as (s)he's creating the "As-Is" model.

Analyzing the business, documenting the processes and data flows, and identifying problems with the current process represent a very big percentage of what a business analyst does.

Having said that, I'm not sure that the "As-Is" model represents 98% of the BA's work.

Do your homework prior to the business analysis interview!

Having an idea of the type of questions you might be asked during a business analyst interview will not only give you confidence but it will also help you to formulate your thoughts and to be better prepared to answer the interview questions you might get during the interview for a business analyst position.  Of course, just memorizing a list of business analyst interview questions will not make you a great business analyst but it might just help you get that next job.
