Working at a Startup or Big Company?

Hi everyone,

I just got 2 offers for a BA role - one is a startup using Agile, the other is an established company using Waterfall.

The startup is a fairly stable, consulting company with many former managers and management consultants.  The established company is a financial firm.

This will be my first BA job - which offer should I accept?  Any help or insight would be appreciated, thanks.

Where do you have an opportunity to learn more ... not just BA stuff, but End-To-End Project activities ?

I do 100% Contracting, so my opinions might be different than a full-time person ... even though I do project management most of the time, I still do everything from BSA, Developer, Operations, Training, etc. Whatever they need at the moment to keep things on schedule.

Just don't get hung up on one thing either ... Agile, Waterfall, Scrum, Kanban, etc.

Many companies either have their own in-house version of something ... ranging from Terror to some type of well structured Hybrid methodology.

How stable is the Start-Up ? Do they have the clients to keep you employed ? Are they using Agile as a quick way to do ad-hoc projects ? Will you constantly be under pressure doing projects ? Who will be your co-located agile team ... and so on.

I would probably start with the Established Company to learn Concept to Implementation projects, documentation and working with various departments (technical, non-technical resources) and so on .... then when you get experienced with all that ... you might feel safer in a start-up.

Hi George,

Expect you've decided already, but go the start-up every time. You'll learn a lot more and get a wider exposure to what a BA does.

Hello George,

When it comes to the classic job-search duel between startup and corporate, you probably know the basics of each type of workplace: Large companies have set hours, but startups are more flexible. But what’s not talked about quite as often is whether a startup or corporate job is better for your career in the long run. Think about it: A startup may provide more flexible hours now, but will it give you the ability to move up into a senior management position in the future? An established company may be the perfect place to get structured on-the-job
