Business Analyst looking for fill knowledge Gaps
Greetings all! I was hoping some of the senior analyst could provide or recommend some reading material to help fill those nasty ole gaps. Currently I hold the role of BA in the generic sense. I create reports, write a lot of VB and even more SQL. Even manage some of our production tables etc. I do work with our database developers on providing functional requirements and also managing these efforts. I am a little timid in the process that goes into application design. Story boarding, Use cases etc. They are this huge mystery. I've tried going the certification route, CAPM and RMP, along with some ITIL certifications, but these are relatively useless in APP Dev, IMO. My objective is to become a more complete business analyst in a software development shop. I am not a programmer by trade so it feels like a upward battle. I just learned how API calls work the other day. (Very green). Any suggestions? I don't want another certification, but a small read 100 pages or so would be great. Thanks a lot Vlookup

Vlookup,

Good for you for realizing and having the desire to round out those BA skills.

How are you documenting functional requirements today?

If you aren't already doing it, read through the Interview Questions that get posted here on a regular basis.  There is a large list of them so far, and they are specifically written to get to the point fast.  Great overview on a lot of different topics.

A basic understanding of Use Cases and UML can go a long way even if you don't plan to use them on a regular basis.  Also Agile is another big topic that can be helpful.  Use Cases are part of and support UML while User Stories are similar to use cases but briefer and part of Agile Analysis and Development.

I could probably dig up a book or two that would help in these areas.
